In karate, the belt system is more than just a means of ranking or measuring progress—it's a profound symbol of growth, discipline, and dedication. Each belt color represents a stage in the practitioner's journey, starting with white, symbolizing innocence and the beginning of the path. As students progress through the ranks, they undergo rigorous training, honing their skills and cultivating both physical and mental strength. The transition from one belt to the next signifies not only mastery of techniques but also personal growth and character development. Beyond the physical aspects, the belt system instills values such as perseverance, humility, and respect for oneself and others. Ultimately, achieving the coveted black belt isn't just about reaching a goal—it's about embodying the principles of karate both on and off the mat, becoming a true martial artist in mind, body, and spirit.
Students are progressed in rank and awarded their new belt at each grading ceremony. Gradings are held four times a year in March, June, September, and December. As students reach higher ranks, the amount of training and time needed between belts gets longer. The major milestone for any martial artist, the black belt, or Shodan, is only awarded at the Shodan grading in either June or December.
Everybody's karate journey will be unique to them but on average, it takes a student who trains twice a week, 5 years to obtain the rank of Shodan ( black belt). It is important to realise that your growth and progression as a martial artist is a marathon, not a sprint. Your journey does not end at black belt. In fact, it is only just beginning.
The Teshinkai grading system is explained in our syllabus, along with an explanation of the meaning behind each belt colour and what is expected of the student to attain that rank. Please click the button below to read more about the grading system in the current syllabus.
Essentially, no. At Teshinkai, we deliver our training and karate education in a supportive, nurturing way and we do not believe in setting students up to fail. When we are deciding who is ready to grade, we will take into account all of your effort and growth over the months since the previous grading. Students who commit to their training, keep regular attendance, and have demonstrated that they are proficient in the requirements for the next rank, will be invited to grade. All you need to do then is participate in the grading ceremony and you will be awarded your new belt. We understand that, from time to time, you may have other plans that clash with a grading ceremony. If you have been invited to grade but are unable to attend at that time, you will be able to grade at the next grading.
